About Emma

FINE ART LUXE WEDDING CAKE DESIGNER

‘Romantic, luxuriously styled weddings, whether intimate or more elaborate, are what I love and making beautifully elegant wedding cakes is what I love to do.  I have a great respect for my craft, the sophisticated process of creating artistic, refined and ornate edible wedding centrepieces. It brings me such joy working with a wedding couple on their design vision, transforming it into a highly bespoke masterpiece, a cake that truly speaks for who they are as a couple, their hopes and dreams.  Your wedding day is the most momentous celebration of love in your life and I strive for your cake to reflect completely.

Before Emma Atelier Cakes was established and many years ago now, I fell in love with beautiful cakes, the type that makes your jaw drop a little as you immerse yourself in the abundance of handcrafted sugar floristry, the elaborate piping work, the graceful floral hand painting, all exuding timeless romance.  Drawing was my favourite pastime as a child growing up in the Gloucestershire countryside and, once I discovered baking soon after, the seed was sown and it was only a matter of time before I found the world of fine art wedding cakes.  My journey did not begin with the designing and making of birthday and novelty cakes.  From the beginning, I wanted to immerse myself in the creation of weddings cakes, it felt more natural to me.  With a degree in Fine Art, internationally recognised qualifications in Sugarcraft (awarded Distinction in the City and Guilds Level 2 in Sugarcraft diploma) and as a longstanding drawing, painting and sculpture enthusiast, weddings felt the only path for me to travel, somewhere where I could share my love of refined cake artistry.

I naturally favour sugar flowers over fresh and hand painted and piped designs over stencils.  There’s something so special about handmade sugar flowers in particular, they have a unique look that surpasses fresh flowers in their beauty when on a cake, a beauty that seems from a bygone era, from another world almost, yet at the same time remaining entirely contemporary.  And what better way to emphasis the elegant feel of your wedding than with a floral ‘impressionist’ style hand painted cake, or even a traditional royal icing piping inspired Bridgerton style cake?

How can a cake so beautiful also taste outstanding? Yet this is what I do at Emma Atelier Cakes.  I like to create delicious wedding cakes that are truly one of a kind in taste. Beautiful flavour is so important to me and I approach it in the same way as when I decorate a cake: it should evoke joyous memories or transport you to a place you have always dreamed of. Why use just lemons, when you can use Amalfi lemons, for example? Luxury, fine tuned flavour and texture combinations should excite you and be an incredible experience for you and your guests. Flavour is the true essence of what an elegant, first class wedding cake experience should, first and foremost, be.

So this is what Emma Atelier Cakes is all about for me.  I make full use of my artistic, baking and sugar craft skills, refined over many years through professional training, when creating my cakes. From initial design through to baking and meticulous decorating, I produce all the cakes myself, taking pride in every aspect of what I do for you.

When not making wedding cakes at my home studio, I also enjoy watching Scandinavian noir TV shows, exploring National Trust sites and walks in nature (especially Lavender fields during summer), travelling to beautiful places (Santorini is my favourite destination, with a trip across the Californian coast being top of the list for my next adventure when I get the time!) and a spot of Salsa dancing!’

A few other little facts about me:

1.      I am mum to two adorable little boys, Hugo and Leo, they are my absolute world.

2.      I have a Masters in clinical Art Psychotherapy and worked for several years in a therapy role in women’s mental health services prior to setting up Emma Atelier Cakes.  Whenever I get a little stressed these days (which we all do from time to time!), baking, drawing and a visit to a beautiful spa for a relaxing massage are my ways of relaxing and recharging.

3.      I am a self confessed lover of all things food.  I LOVE exploring new gourmet eateries, checking out new bakeries and delicatessens and discovering new high end afternoon tea spots on the block!

4.      My mornings are not complete unless I’ve had my freshly brewed coffee!

5.      I am a cat person.

6.      I adore Magnolia trees and love the one we have in our garden.

7.      I love beautiful style and this influences many aspects of my life, from my home interiors and clothes through to the books I read and the places I spend my time in.  One of my favourite places in the world is Riga in Latvia, where my wonderful husband, Andris, is from - it’s my home from home. In this beautiful European city exists the highest concentration of Art Nouveau architecture in the world – it is a big source of style inspiration for me!

8. The most exciting experience in my cake training journey so far as been studying under the direction of Maggie Austin, world renowned cake artist. I completed her sugarflower masterclass, ‘Foxglove and friends’ in London with the Dawn Walton Cake School in 2022 and it has taken my sugar flower skills to an incredible level!

If you feel I could create the wedding cake you have dreamed of, please do not hesitate to get in touch with me – I would love to hear from you.
